Ombudsman John S. Fernandes has over 30 years experience in Federal law enforcement. Mr. Fernandes began his law enforcement career with the United States Secret Service, assigned to protective details at the White House and Vice President’s residence. Prior to his appointment as the County’s third Ombudsman, Mr. Fernandes spent 27 years with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The Department of Ombudsman assists individuals who have filed complaints involving the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or the Office of Public Safety personnel, and are dissatisfied with the results of the subsequent investigation. The Department also assists individuals to determine the status of their complaints. Appointed by the Board of Supervisors, the Ombudsman acts independently from both the Sheriff’s Department and the Office of Public Safety.

Ms. Maxberry has over 22 years of County Service holding numerous positions within the criminal justice system. During her tenure with the Ombudsman, she has helped the public with complaints, overseen budget and finance and personnel functions and has worked with the department heads to establish policies and procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. Ms. Maxberry is actively involved in the Quality and Productivity Commission Manager’s Network serving as Second Vice-Chair. She is a graduate of the County’s Learning Academy and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. An avid reader, Ms. Maxberry helps children learn to read in her free time.
