Ernie Takemoto has worked in a
variety of assignments during his more than
30 year career as a probation officer,
including juvenile and adult supervision,
residential treatment programs, school based
programs, and specialized gang suppression
programs—including the Asian gang unit.
While working the Asian gang unit, he became
involved in working in the Asian community
by providing information and assistance to
parents and community based organizations
concerning Asian juvenile gangs. During this
period of time, Ernie felt that Asians were
not given the same type of services that
other ethnic groups were receiving.
He also felt that Asian probation officers
were not being represented and as a result
started the Asian Pacific Probation
Association (APPA) in 1993, serving as
president for the first seven years. Using
the LACAAEA as a model and with the
assistance and advice of former president
Howard Takata, APPA became a viable and
recognizable employee association in the
Probation Department. Ernie believes that
with his knowledge and experience that he
received working with Howard Takata and the
LACAAEA, it was time to give back to the
LACAAEA and its membership. It is an honor
and a pleasure for him to be serving on the
Board as one of the two Association’s Vice
Presidents..
