23rd Annual Fish Fry on Sept 9, 2006
View Fish Fry Photos >>

On September 9, 2006 under beautiful blue skies, LACAAEA held its 23rd Annual Fish Fry at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey. Nearly 130 members and their families and friends enjoyed the abundance of good food and good company on this “thanksgiving day”. LACAAEA President, Henry Yee (Sheriff’s Dept), stirred up the BIG POT of seafood chowder, as did Fish Fry co-founder, Phil Ow (retiree CAO), who cooked up the steamed fish, sweet and sour fish, and deep fried fish filets. As usual, crafts were provided for the children. However, this year, the grown ups wanted to participate and make the beautiful colorful sand and candle bowls too. Thanks go to Susan Kudo-Lee (County Counsel) for the craft ideas. Excitement is always in the air when the prizes are raffled off to adults and children, as well as cash prizes to LACAAEA members. Thanks go to Lorraine Sunday Brown (CAO) for picking out the fun-filled raffle prizes. For the first time, BINGO was played at the Fish Fry and it was a BIG HIT for all who played for cash awards. Calling out the BINGO numbers was Fish Fry co-founder, Ralph Hamada (retiree ISD), and assisted by President Henry Yee and LACAAEA Correspondence Secretary, Mary Lam (Assessor’s Office). LACAAEA Vice President and Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Irene Hamada (Superior Court) awarded the Howard Takata Trade/Vocational Scholarship to Leanne Oda, daughter of Peter Oda of Public Health Department; the Ed Lee Continuing Education Scholarship to Kathryn Tokushige, daughter of David Tokushige of the Assessor’s Office; and the Shirley Bolinger Four-Year Undergraduate Scholarship to Aaron Mayeda, son of Kenji Mayeda of the Fire Department. The all day fun music was provided by DJ Evan Brown (husband of Lorraine). The 2007 Fish Fry is tentatively scheduled for September 8th. So mark your calendar to save the date because there’s a winning BINGO card waiting for you. See you then!
